Rainforest Expireance

They were able to find these experiences

"We spent two days in this rainforest into the nature of the lung of Sri Lanka in order to find species of animals such as amphibians, snakes and butterflies.

Did you know that...? Sinharaja is considered a Biosphere Reserve and was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO as it is the last area of primary tropical forest in all of Sri Lanka."

traveling_zolks: For Valentine's Day , instead of a sack with heart - shaped treats and chocolates , my children got leeches and snakes . And mostly , they loved it . 80 % of Sri Lanka used to be covered in rainforest and that amount dwindled in the last 200 years to 17 % because ... tea . In photo 3 , you see the tea plantation carved right out of the rainforest . Sinharaja Forest Reserve has been protected for decades . You need a guide to get in , and ours was invaluable . ( You also need leech socks - pic 2 - but more than that later . )Our guide spotted : an Indian cobra , vine snake , and a green pit viper ( all resting quietly , thankfully ) , toque macaques , and purple - faced langurs ( both in the monkey family ) , a 3 - inch spider , a couple of lizard types , a bunch of birds and butterflies .

We pushed away vines to reach two waterfalls . It really was magical . Except for the leeches . They conquered those leech socks and reached most parts of most of our bodies . Penelope had one on her neck and her back , Scott had two on his stomach , Mira had two between her toes . They're a bit like short black earthworms and their front and back ends stick . You have to flick them or pull them , and they're very tenacious . The people here swat them off like mosquitoes , but we were truly grossed out . Yet , at the end of the day like this , we walk away only with stories to tell .
